Black Eagle Pass Road.

When I arrived at the camp with Max and Sarge, the ‘Bama boys were still in their tents in their sleeping bags. Probably still drunk or high from the night before.

Didn’t matter to me if they slept right through my visit. I didn’t need them awake to do what I needed to do. I gave Max Shawna’s shirt and Sarge her bandana and let them carry the items around and get her scent.

They were Belgian Malinois, not Bloodhounds but they were well-trained and smart and they had a keen sense of smell. They ran around the campsite sniffing and they came up cold.

One of the guys heard the dogs and he wandered out of his tent to see what was going on. He pissed on the grass at the side of his tent, then lit up a smoke.

“You’re Kent Randolph, right?”

“So what?”

I smiled at him. “I recognized you from your mug shot, Kent. I know Bart’s name but I’d like the names of your other two buddies.”

He grabbed a beer out of the cooler near the dead campfire and popped the top. “What are you doing here?”

“You know exactly what I’m doing here, Kent. I’m looking for Shawna Mullins.”

“We ain’t see her since the other night. Told you that already.”

“Yeah, you did.”

“Nothing more I can tell you, Sheriff.”

“You can tell me the names of the other two guys or I’ll have to take the four of y’all in on suspicion of kidnapping. You, Mister Randolph, are my most likely suspect.”

“I served my time and you got no right to harass me.”

“All I’m asking for is a couple of names. Is that so hard to grasp?”

“What’s going on out here?” Bart Kensington was awake and on the defensive. So were the dogs. Growling at Bart, they came charging over to protect me.

“Kent and I were having a conversation.”

“About what?”

“About Shawna and where she might be.”

“I told you the truth when you asked me, Sheriff. She was at the roadhouse when we left.”

“I want everybody’s ID right now. As soon as I see it, I’m out of here.”

“Let me get that for you.” Bart’s voice was steady. He was cocky and a little arrogant. Showed no fear of me. He came back from the tent with the IDs of the other two guys. Paul Grigsby and Mike Longworth. I wrote the names and home addresses down in my book.

“Thanks. Wasn’t that hard, was it?”

I headed back to town, disappointed that the dogs hadn’t picked up Shawna’s scent. Was it better that she hadn’t been to their campsite or did that mean she hadn’t gotten that far?

If she never got to their camp, where had they stopped?
